We take sunrise pictures whenever we can motivate ourselves to be out of bed and at a location we think might offer good photographic opportunity.  Unlike sunset pictures where you can see what might be coming and make plans to take advantage of the opportunity, sunrise pictures are more of a surprise.

Our best sunrise pictures have been taken when we were traveling very early and took advantage of chance opportunities.  Needless to say, we have lots more sunset pictures than sunrise pictures.

New Mexico is a good place for sunrise pictures because there are long stretches of highway where there are no towns or lights for miles.  In some cases there aren't even power lines.   Mountains are frequently visible as a backdrop.
